You have alread gotten some great suggestions. In addition to those I suggest you look at local wine shops and coffe bars. Many of them have music on Friday and Saturdays, but they rely on wod of mouth and don't advertise. We saw some great acoustic music at "Sip" (Wine store) in Cary on Friday. Electric Beanze in Fuquay regualrly has music on Fri and Saturday that starts at 7:00. Shuckers in Wake Forest has great guitar/singing acts on their patio every Wed, Thur, Fri, starting between 5:30 and 7:00 in the summer. Seafood North has a muscial duo every Tuesday at 7:00. Keep you eyes peeled. There is a lot of music going on around but you need to dig a little to find it.

For example: This Thursday the Poppyseed Market in N. Raleigh will have a free wine tasting with live music by a Jazz Guitarist starting at 6pm. They don't advertise this, I just discovered this by searching around on the internet and facebook.

Here is another example of a place that regulary has live music on the weekend (starting at 6pm). But they don't heavily advertise so most people only find out by stumbling upon it.

You can hear live music every Saturday night at Georgina's Pizzeria & Restaurant in Morrisville. Here is the music schedule for the next month and or so.

The ArtsCenter in Carrboro. Just caught an excellent Mindy Smith concert there a week ago.
