My house is almost 21 years old and we have the lovely masonite siding! I get my house painted every 8 years. At that time, there is usually some masonite that gets replaced. By now, my house is l/3 fiber cement!!! I just recently had the siding on both dormers replaced. I use Steve with The Paint Company. He brushes instead of spraying, which was what I wanted. He also does 2 coats of paint on the siding and 1 coat on the trim. Holds up for about 8 years. Hubby would have it painted less but it annoys me if my house looks dirty! Hence the reason the siding on the dormers were just replaced!

We've used Steve Noble's crew from the Paint Company too. They do brush the siding and was probably one of the better experiences we've had with painters.
The Paint Co. uses Sherwin Williams paint ... you might consider the high solids Duration line. We used Duration on our trim last time and it held up much better than Superpaint. Its expensive ...

I had to go back into my files to find the name of the color of my siding for the guys who replaced the siding on the dormers and it was Duration. Maybe he switched once he found out it was holding up better?

I've used Steve twice and I'll use him again when it is time to repaint!

Thanks - I actually called earlier today and left a message for the Paint Company based on previous recommendations posted here on CD. Just waiting on a call back!

Default Caring for Masonite Siding (Composition Hardboard)

Whew! There is a lot to address here . . . . . .

Composition hardboard is just what is says that it is: a "composition" of many wood fibers, wood waste, cardboard, and resin, covered with a thin outer membrane. This hardboard is/was manufactured by many companies with the Masonite Corporation, Certainteed, and Abitibi leading the way.

Protecting the thin outer membrane is crucial to the effectiveness of the siding. After all, siding is supposed to protect the sheathing/insulation/framing from water penetration.

IF the composition hardboard was installed correctly and
IF the framing did not get wet and shrink pulling the nailheads through the membrane and
IF the siding was properly sealed with a 100% acrylic elastro-meric caulk and
IF the siding was properly primed with a good quality primer and
IF the siding was properly painted with a good quality paint then it CAN last for DECADES!

Unfortunately, we rarely find this to be true in our area. In my opinion, never should another siding be installed over composition hardboard. If you cannot inspect the wall sheathing for water penetration by removing the first layer of siding, how can you tell if there is ANY damage or to what degree water has penetrated the siding?

Protect and seal the outer membrane of "contact paper" and life is good. Allow water to penetrate around butt joints, nail heads, trim boards, etc. and siding replacement is in your future.

Painting with an airless sprayer often gets a bad rap due to poor craftsmanship and application techniques. There are some situations where spraying is actually preferred; dental mouldings for example. We often will brush paint composition hardboard siding for the first coat and spray the second coat to remove brush marks and provide an additional coat of protection.

All the comments about extra care to properly coat the "lip" of each "lap" are extremely important. Water that "hangs" here is just looking for an entry point.

If you own a home, you have two enemies (not the mortgage company and the tax assessor). Water and UV rays from the sun are constantly attacking the exterior of your home.

Thanks.

I used Custom Home Exteriors to do my siding replacement. The painting portion was hand brushed, 2 coats and they used the paint formula I specified (Duration by Sherwin Williams in a satin finish).

While I decided to have all my masonite replaced, as big areas were beyond help, I bet they'd be happy to do the job for you.
