Good points brentwood. I find that there is not an abundance of excessive wealth in the Triangle but the pervasive attitude, especially in Cary is one of subtle snobbery. That "keeping up with the Jones" mentality.

"Pervasive?" "Keeping up with the Jones'"

There is some, as in any area, but I mostly just meet great people who are living life without trying to impress people.
I guess one finds what one seeks.

For example, if one is looking for a gated community, they will not find one in Cary.

Good for you. Certainly not seeking that, just an observation. I don't know why anyone would go out of their way to seek that.

I've been sensing reverse snobbery in this thread.

I think you should be good in most of the Triangle. I'd stay out of Cary, and stay out of downtown Raleigh. North Raleigh is nice, and you could probably find some great homes and neighborhoods in the mid 200's/low 300's. I concur with the previous poster that mentioned Bedford at Falls River, off 540 and Falls of Neuse. I have several friends who purchased homes out there and just can't say enough good about it.

I feel your pain. I couldn't get out of Palm Beach quick enough!

Basically anywhere you go in the Triangle will be heaven compared to PBC! Good luck!

As a side note, Cary reminds me of South Florida. Too much traffic crammed into too little space. Coming from Palm Beach, it's not the "hoity toity" area that people try to make it out to be, it's just a congested town. No more, no less. (but still better than Florida!)

Cary's congested? Where? I live here and don't see it - ever.

South FL on the other hand is a gridlock

Well ljd, Cary is a large town. You could certainly live on the outskirts and avoid the traffic. I avoid Cary at all costs. Anywhere near stores is congested, and don't get me started on the Moderator cut: language Crossroads. Who the heck designed those roads?

OK, I honestly forgot about Crossroads (I mentally block it!)....I totally agree about the clusterf%&k comment. I avoid it at all costs and mainly because every time I've gone there, I exit onto Walnut St, in hopes of heading back towards Maynard or Rt 1 and ALWAYS somehow end up on Buck Jones Rd.!!!!

For the record, I live near High House and Davis...minimal traffic here. Quite peaceful actually.

I hear ya. I lived in S. Florida too and let me tell you, no matter where you go around here, you'll be very happy. Holly Springs and Apex are very family friendly towns and you could get a great home in your price range. It's a bit further from Duke, however, I have a friend here (Holly Springs) who goes there 2 days a week for her son (he has leukemia) and she doesn't mind it. The benefits of the small town vibe, yet close to everything outweighs the drive. Pick a place your comfortable with and love...you live at home, not the hospital. Best of luck to you!
