Toluene, available at paint stores by one gallon and five gallon cans, is a widely used octane booster for those who require higher a octane than pump gas provides. Toluene has an octane rating of 114, so mixing tolune and 92 octane premium gas in a 50/50 ratio will yield your desired 103 octane number. Tolune will cost you around $4/gallon in you buy it in 5 gallon cans, less if you buy a 55 gallon drum. You may be buying a lot of this stuff if you require running a 50% mixture.

Xylene is another octane booster but I don't know where you can get readily buy it.

I don't know why your mechanic said "occasionally". You either need it or you don't. Does your mechanic think that they 103 will clean out the combustion chambers when it is used or something. The reason you run a higher octaine is that it burns easily and lowers the chances of blowing up your head due to fuel not being sparked. This is needed when the compression is raised beyond "normal" levels.

What compression will your 383 have?

I used to race at Cecil and E-town and we would run over 100 octane fuel in the cars. It just "seemeed" to run better. You will notice it more at the top end with the higher RPM's
