I remember that there was a thread about a vet in the Raleigh area but I can't find the thread. A few of you had mentioned a vet that was on Capital. Seemed like it was someone that lots of folks had used and trusted.

I am having a problem with my 8 year old Sheltie. She is coughing, drooling, having problems swallowing and her tummy makes lots of gurgling sounds (sounds like she has an alien in there).

I have spent well over $1500 and the vet we are using can't figure out what is wrong with her so I need a new vet!

Suggestions? I'm in North Raleigh but I don't mind driving to see another vet if it is someone that y'all believe is GOOD.

TIA! Vicki

We go to Banfield at Petsmart because 1. they have the plan for 20 bucks a month where you have unlimited office visits, discounted surgeries, vaccinations included, it's a good deal, 2. you don't need an appointment, and 3. there are 3 or 4 vets so if you don't like one you can see another. Also makes it convenient because the store is attached. We have been very happy with them and according to their records we have saved over $1200 so far (2 yrs) by having the plan.

I think the hospital you are referring to is Magnolia Animal Hospital. I have never used them but the reviews on this board have been very positive.

I wouldn't choose Banfield for an emergency. Ever.

Vicki my vet is in Durham but is great - Triangle Animal Hospital - but that's far; I hope others weigh in!

Maybe get a referral to a specialist rather than starting over with another 'general' vet?

NC State could be one option (Veterinary Teaching Hospital :: North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine).

I took one of my dogs here to Veterinary Surgical Referral Practice to see an orthopedic specialist - I'm sure they have internal medicine ones as well.

Good luck!

VSRP doesn't have internal med specialists on staff. For that, the best bets are probably either the teaching hospital at NCSU or Veterinary Specialty Hospital, which has a location in North Raleigh.

My parent's had a German Shepard that they took to the NCSU vet school with stomach issues. They were very pleased with the level of care and service they received, even though the condition was not curable. I know others who have used the Vet School and have been pleased.

Vicki, I hope your sheltie has a speedie recovery!

I stand corrected about VSRP - good to know!

VSH seems like a very good option for Vicky's dog, especially since they are in North Raleigh - from their internal medicine page:

Quote:
Internal Medicine
An internist will review your pet’s history, evaluate any laboratory and radiology tests, and perform a complete physical exam. An internist’s training prepares them to deal with complex and challenging cases. Veterinary internists have training and experience in ultrasound, endoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, bone marrow biopsy and temporary feeding tube placement. Commonly treated cases referred to the internal medicine service include animals with diseases of the endocrine, gastrointestinal, urinary, and hematologic systems.

Default Pet Sound Animal Hospital

is the best. Dr.Kevin Monce is an internal medicine vet who does routine vet care too. Right off Tryon Road by Wake Med Cary--I think the actual address is Ashville Avenue if you want to look him up. They do lots of rescue animals and are very understanding. Been using them for 5+ years since we moved down here. Has done surgery on both the ACLs on my dog with great results.
