My family and I checked out Chapel Hill and Carrboro yesterday since my husband has a potential transfer to Burlington. We are a family of 5. I was hoping to find neighborhoods near the downtown areas that are walkable, but what I found was either very, very small in Carrboro or too close to the University in Chapel Hill.
As an alternative, we would consider a neighborhood that has walkable amenities built into it such as Southern Village, which was very nice but is not convenient to Burlington, I don't believe. Are there any neighborhoods on the north side of CH/C that have amenities similar to Southern Village? I don't mind older neighborhoods, and I'm not looking for a huge home, but something with 4 bedrooms is a minimum. If anyone can tell me development names, I'd appreciate it. Or, if there are neighborhoods near the downtown that I may have missed, please let me know street names or something similar. Thanks so much!

Those areas, plus Meadowmont and Southern Village, tend to define the most "walkable" areas in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Neighborhoods on the north end of Chapel Hill and Carrboro tend not the have the kinds of mixed-use features that make them walkable.
Chapel Hill has defined the MLK/Weaver Dairy Rd. area as a high density development area, which over time should develop some greater walkability - but still it won't be like an urban core.

There are many walkable neighborhoods, but it depends on what you mean by walkability. Where do you want to walk? for exercies or destination shopping? two very different things.
Most neighborhoods on Homestead, Weaver Dairy have tennis courts, pools, clubhouse and sidewalks. We walk in our neighborhood all the time.seems like the only time we see our neighbors. But nobody walks to anyplace although I see alot of walkers and bicycle riders going to school at McDougle. However I know of no shopping within walking distance. And as far as I know Carrbor has no walkable neighborhoods with pools, tennis courts, etc. A good realtor will know right where to take you.
I know your possible move is along way away but don't think you will be obligated to any realtor you hook up with now for all these preliminary questions. he/she will be happy to help early.
