cutting to the chase here, my sister needs to relocate to Duke, for her 8 yr old son who has survived ALD (rare genetic disease). He will get the best long term and rehab medical treatment there, she will have support system.
They are in miami right now. father must remain there with other children and home, job, keep insurance going.
these are good christian people, married 26 years and former (non paid) foster and adoptive parents.

my husband and i are in Michigan, trying to help with what we can here.
transportation has been arranged. now we are helping to locate housing.
she needs rental "cheap and safe" she says.
they ask nothing from anyone and have done much ministry work, their church deserted them through this.
we are not familiar with the area, but Burlington is right in the middle of the two cities with the resources they need.

can anyone throw a lead this way to help me look? the child has done better than anyone hoped, he received a bone marrow transplant almost 2 years ago from his brother, a US Marine. In order to continue to recover
they must relocate to the facilities with the best specialists, resources, etc.

they are going to need housing and very basic furniture. her 15 yr old son is her only helper and will be with her. they homeschool.

i understand the situation too well because my husband collapsed in january with kidney failure. he was 25 yrs a paramedic/firefighter and we live a homestead healthy lifestyle in an Amish community. the road of navigating a child or other family member through a serious health crisis is nothing you can really explain to people unless thye have been there, unfortunetly.
*sigh*

so if anyone can throw this Aunt a bone, this Aunt will chase it like a hound on a rabbit..
thank you in advance!

Default update

UPDATE:

sister left yesterday with ill son and helper son. called at 3 am to say they were stopping to rest in SC. they should be there in NC soon. only problem is she is heading to Outer Banks to stay a day or so to rest with other son who is stationed there. much prayer has resulted in many good provisions, now more needed for housing. bad time to get there but no choice due to medical issues and doc appt.s
thank you for all who chimed in!

ok, called the ronald mcdonald house. need referral from the doc for the night of their appt., no openings for long term stay (would be night to night right now), but can be put on wait list.
no long term wait list till doc sees patient and accepts. all of it hinges on child being seen by doc. they don't say how you get child these long distances for these appts, *geesh*, and no help to transport unless new doc SEES patient first and accepts. anyway, she says they will get hotel room when get there and go from there. lordy.

If they are looking for a hotel in Burlington, anything at exit 141 is decent, safe and reasonably priced. And there are plenty of restaurants, grocery, Walmart, etc very close by.

Try the patient advocates or social workers at Duke at this link:

Important Contacts - Duke University Hospital - DukeHealth.org

I know when my brother-in-law had a stem cell transplant at Sloan Kettering in NYC, housing resources for family weren't easy to find unless you asked the right person.
