I just moved to Raleigh and hoped to volunteer as a mentor at a local school. Unfortunately, Wake County school district is not accepting volunteers at this time - they already have more than they can handle. Does anyone know of another district near North Raleigh (I live near Lead Mine/Millbrook) that may not have the abundance of volunteers that Wake County seems to have?

You might want to check with nearby churches - I know my church doesn't necessarily work with schools, but they do work with programs that involve children. Just a thought!

Maybe calling a school directly would work. Brentwood Elementary is in the Wake County system, but they've often sent out requests for volunteers.

Sign ups for a background check to volunteer in the school has been closed for the year (although there was some mention of re-opening it later in the spring). So if you didn't get up to a school and apply for your background check, you can't volunteer in a Wake County school right now.
Perhaps Granville County schools? I lived in the area the OP described and I worked in Butner. It took me about 40 minutes, Creedmoor is even a little closer. Durham isn't very far either.
