Depending on where you live, there are multiple park and ride lots that may (or may not) be closer to you.
I take the one from the Wake Med Soccer park in Cary and yes, children under 40 inches are free!

I went today with my three year old son and my mother in law. We got there around 10am and left about 2pm. Plenty of crowds, lots of parents with kids, and tons of food. It wasn't bad, but it was ideal either. It seemed really crowded for a Tuesday. Still, we had fun and my son loved his first State Fair!

OH, parking is atrocious. I suggest taking a shuttle bus or something like that. The police officers are great at directly traffic, but there are too many cars!

So, I just came back and honestly didn't think it was that crowded compared to what I'm used to!

I got to the fair around 4pm on Sunday and it was great. The lines weren't horrible and the food was greasily delicious!

I heard there are funnel cakes made with brownie batter. It's the first fair food that has ever sounded good! Plan to try it out Friday!

The economy is alive and kicking at the fair! No shortage of spending there.

We went Tuesday about 2pm. This was our first fair visit and it seemed crowded to me, but we didn't wait for any rides and none of the rides were even full, so I think it was a comparatively quiet time to go. We parked in the pay lot across the street. We left about 6pm and there were tons of people leaving and arriving at that time. It felt busier at night, probably because people come for the fireworks and the rides are all lit up and fun to see. I'm glad we went - we had a great time! But it is definitely a once-a-year event for me. I don't think I can brave it again with the kids this week.

We went to the fair last night around 7:30pm. I was expecting huge crowds similar to the past few years. I was pleasantly surprised. We found a parking spot very easily and it really wasn't that crowded at all. There were no lines for the kiddie rides - my nephew went right on every single one. My daughter went on the big rides and the wait on those were pretty minimal also (less than 10 minutes). Guess we lucked out and picked a good night (thankfully!).

Default Pictures of the crowd from Saturday

These were taken Saturday afternoon. Hopefully gives a perspective on the size of the crowd.

Cheap local fun! (Cheaper than flying across the country that is).
