Ooops, didn't make your five-hour drive cutoff-- but Snowshoe Mountain, West Virginia (6 hour drive from Raleigh according to Google Maps) has some of the best skiing in the region. 1500 ft vertical. Probably beats other closer resorts. I've skied Snowshoe many times and I think it's worth the extra hour's drive.
