I'm coming up for about a week from 11/2-8, spending some time in Raleigh/Cary, and some time in CH/Durham.
I went online but wanted to ask for some local recommendations for someplace cheap and clean? Also any areas to avoid?

We've always stayed at the Embassy Suites in Cary (Harrison Oaks Blvd) - has a nice indoor pool and you can't beat the free cooked-to-order breakfast, and free happy hour every night.

I saw an Embassy Suites at the intersection of 540 and 70 yesterday, not sure what that location is called or if it's new or what. Can you tell we like Embassy Suites?!

There is an Embassy Suites across the street from Crabtree Valley Mall in N. Raleigh. There are also three more hotels right there at the same mall. La Quinta, Holiday Inn, and Residence Inn. All very nice and you can get great rates through Priceline. Very nice mall, and each hotel is within walking distance. Literally across the street. Also right next to the beltline which makes it easy to get to Cary, Chapel Hill, and Durham.

I would avoid hotels on south Capital Blvd. They are cheaper, but lots of riff raff at times. You will be very pleased if you choose one of the hotels near Crabtree Mall, which is on Glenwood Ave. LOTS of shopping and great restaurants. Very safe area! Have fun while visiting. :-)

If you want to stay in Downtown Durham, the Durham Marriott has a market rate of around $100 a night for a weekend.

There are some much less expensive hotels halfway between Durham and CH on 15-501. The Red Roof Inn right at 15-501 and I40 is older, so if you want something modern and clean, there is a La Quinta on 15-501, and a new Homewood Suites on Mt Moriah Rd. The Homewood Suites is directly adjacent to a huge shopping center, so it is in walking distance to quite a few restaurants.
