Depends on the species. You can find lumber on Craigslist and Facebook marketplace. Ive bought Walnut from a guy in Hillsborough for $6bf and it was very good quality. Ive bought maple from capital city lumber. A little pricey but I didnt need much so it worked out fine.
If you are buying enough bd ft to make it worth the drive, call Wall lumber near the VA line. I don't see planing/jointing listed on his webpage right now, but they used to offer it. It was pretty reasonable upcharge a number of years ago. If buying a pickup truck full of hardwood you can save quite a bit over the local places.
