Hi everybody,

My husband and I currently rent a home in Wilmington and are considering a move to Raleigh but know very little about the area. We like Wilmington but are looking for a larger city with more shopping / dining options. From what I have read so far, it looks like North Raleigh might be a good fit for us. We have 2 dogs, no kids, and would like to rent a decent size house with a fireplace, large fenced yard and pool if possible.

So, I have a few questions

1. Would you say the cost of living is lower, higher, or about the same as Wilmington?

2. What areas would you recommend that are close to downtown but not in a historic type district? (I understand the houses tend to be much smaller) Also, what is the average rent in these areas for a house?

3. What neighborhoods should we stay away from? (high crime etc.)

4. Where are the best restaurants / shops?

5. Are there any cafes or restaurants with outdoor seating that allow dogs?

6. If you are from New York or a large city what are your thoughts on Raleigh?

Thank you so much! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My husband and I have seen dogs sitting quite politely on chairs at tables outside restaurants, dining with their owners in Cameron Village (a shopping center in Raleigh). Cracks us up.

As far as cost of living comparisons, you can find online calculators that may give you a better idea of that.

Spotcrime.com can tell you about crime.

Opinions on "best" restaurants are subjective. Google "Greg Cox," the newsobserver.com restaurant critic and read his reviews. One of my favorite restaurants is Irregardless Cafe in Raleigh. We also like 18 Seaboard.

Raleigh is a lot more boring than Manhattan.
