am I planning on relocating from one awful school district to another one? Southern CA is in a deep hole right now and I had pretty high hopes for Wake county. Does subbing for a starter helps in any way? or why bother ?and should look elsewhere instead??? but where if all I ever did was teaching :

me too. Left the dying system in Michigan and now...NC will have another 10% cut for the 2010-2011 year. This on top of last year's 15% cuts. Most districts (aka counties) will lose at least 70-90 teachers and 90% of teacher assistants/ Might look at NoVA or parts of Texas?

Um...not to be yet another downer, but Wake County is no longer accepting subs either. They have too many as it is. Hopefully that will change at least because normally that is a great way to get your foot in the door, but not at the moment.

Don't let them scare you off completely...there is no way Wake Co is as bad as CA. Not academically and not economically. I think you'll find the schools are pretty good by comparison.

My predictions: they won't end up cutting a full 400 positions, and some of these will be due to attrition. Any newcomers will have to get in line behind those who have more experience or seniority. you might have to wait a year or two for the dust to settle. I'm trying to see this as an opportunity to explore and expand my skills in other areas. I might even go back to school for a second certificate in special ed.

Don't be too sad about substituting...it really isn't anything like teaching.

I assume the terminating contract will be a temporary (yearly) contract here in San Diego. I already signed 5 of those and every year looking forward to signing another one. Since the school district keeps me as a temporary teacher I can not get a probationary status and therefore became tenured. It's pretty much "my way or highway". What is the general process of becoming a tenured employee in NC? Here it should go temporary, prob 1, prob 2 and tenured. Not so true for the last 6-7 years.

At this point I don't really care where I will end up teaching as long as I will eventually teach, period.
It is the same here, huge cuts predictions that usually settle by the end of August and the cuts end up being not so drastic. I was also considering sp.ed or math to add to my license. And regarding subbing, here it is a good way to put your foot in so I guess I would love to try it out first. Would I be able to register as a substitute with my CA credentials?

How did you find out that they will accept your FTCE (Florida?? am I right?) Or did you just submit all your paperwork and they notified you what was OK with them and what else you needed?

I called the state and asked a whole slew of questions. I was actually expecting them to require me to take Praxis, but they said they'd take the FTCEs. However, I did have to send other documentation not on the list. They wanted a letter from the state of Florida explaining how they determined my Highly Qualified status. They were pretty helpful though. Look on the link I posted earlier in this thread and you'll find the 800 number where you can call and ask that question. You'll want to make sure you give them exactly what you need when you send in your package because they'll only hold them for two weeks waiting for additional materials before they return the package to you.
