During this time of year, please be aware your children might be going to school with kids who don't have warm clothes or proper shoes. Here in Chapel Hill we have many immigrants who are unprepared for this climate. I just helped a new family in this situation and it really made me feel better than it probably made them feel.
I just contacted my school's resources officer and she helped me direct my gifts.
Same here. Our school has an Outreach Committee. It has clothes drive/give away twice a year, as well as food/card drive for Tday and gift drive for Xmas. There is a lot of need.
This is what worries me about the new Board creating these high poverty schools (and that is what they are doing). You can throw School Board money at education issues for those kids, but what parents in high poverty schools are going to have the time or wherewithal to help with outreach type issues, or other issues addressed by a strong PTA, such as cultural programs, teacher support, etc. like keep many schools great? Sorry...an aside...
