I have had exactly the same experience with the sound level. I've even contacted the director, Bob Klaus. Of course, nothing came of it. I was told that everything is professionally done, the sound levels are monitored and are standard, etc. Next time I go I'm bringing a decibel meter ...
Maybe if we could get enough people with the same complaint, they'll listen ...

We requested season tickets for our daughter and her friend and just received notice that the seats are in the last row of the balcony on the side. They are trying to decide whether to go ahead with the purchase and buy binoculars or skip it until they can better seats. Any advice?

Are you referring to season tickets for the Broadway Series at the DPAC? If so, there are several packages where price is based on the seating:

GOLD CIRCLE

Limited Availability – Act Quickly!
Exceptional seats located in the front of the Orchestra and Grand Tier sections of the theater with unbelievable views of the stage. Season tickets range from $450 to $40- for the seven-show package.
BROADWAY’S BEST

Our #1 Seller!
Our most popular package with great seats located throughout the Orchestra and Grand Tier sections. Season tickets range from $235.50 to $443.50 for the seven-show package. Don’t miss your chance at our best seats, a treasure for a lifetime.
VALUE CIRCLE

Our Best Value
A limited number of great seats located in Balcony Rows A-H. These seats offer a dramatic view of the stage at a tremendous value. Season tickets range from $165.50 to $317.50.
SUPER SAVER

Starting at less than $20 per show.
You can’t beat the savings with these Balcony Rows J-N seats located no farther than 135 feet from center stage. Season tickets range from $125.50 to $245.50 for the seven-show package and offer incredible sightlines at an incredible price.
PEAK SEATS PACKAGE

In Balcony Rows O-P, see the best Broadway in the region for right at $15 per ticket

Which package did you request? Are the tickets in the 1st or 2nd balcony? If they are in the 2nd balcony, I would spend a few more $ and get at least the Value Circle or Broadway's Best package. Or, if she is a student, she can take her chances with Student Rush tickets. They are always a good deal. Here is a link to the seating chart. You can click on any section and get an idea of what the stage will look like from that area. Durham Performing Arts Center DPAC's Official Home Page :: Seating Chart
Hope this helps!

DPAC is very proud of both the acoustics and the sound clarity and the vast majority of guests tell us this is the best sounding theater they have ever visited. Sound levels are measured at every event and feedback given to the touring show personnel that control the levels. As a large contemporary and commercial theater the major touring shows we host are always amplified. Guests used to classical music venues may find the more pop and rock oriented shows we host to have a much more dyanamic sound than classical music venues or the Broadway shows of the past.

For sound, the back row is just fine. For viewing, not so much. We saw Blue Man Group from the back row, and at times, I could barely see what was going on. Sounded just fine, though.

We went to Yanni and had AWESOME seats, and it was phenomenal.
