Clayton.
Johnston County Schools have better scores than the Wake County Schools in the Garner area.
Keep in mind that part of Garner is also in Johnston County.

Depends on what you need to be near or work. Generally speaking, if schools are not an issue Garner is fine. The new board is shifting students from there in an effort to keep only Garner kids in their schools. This might increase the scores...TBD. BTW - I have known some very bright, well educated people who went thru Garner schools.

If we do choose to live in Garner, we would stay in the Johnston County school district. Schools aside, what are your impressions/contrasts between the towns? People/population, housing, family oriented, entertainment/restaurants, retail/development, etc? Thanks!

West Johnston (which serves Garner area students) is very good school as well. It's honestly a toss up, and the cities are close enough to almost be one. Based on EOC tests Clayton High is 10/469 in NC, West Johnston is 25/469. There is a new High school some Garner area kids may attend called Cleveland, which is an unknown quantity at his point. As far as elementary schools Clayton has 2 in the top 10. The number 4/1136 and 9/1136. I'm sure the realtors serve both areas, find a place you like in Johnston County, regardless of it's in Clayton or garner, and you should be fine. IMO there is no significant difference besides a slightly longer commute from Clayton and slightly heavier traffic in Garner.

Very true! I actually have friends that graduated from the Garner High School. The current problem has to do with Wake County busing in too many of the lower income students. And...I have clients that have bought in Garner and are happy there.
I do find that there are many more newer n'hoods in Clayton than Garner.

Sneeze the right way and you're in either. Where are you going to work? Garner is easier to get to in some places. Clayton as well.

In Johnston County, there is quite a fine line between Garner and Clayton in many areas. In fact, half of our subdivision is in Garner and half is in Clayton. All of our kids go to the same schools, we just have different zip codes. This was a very confusing thing for us, and initially made the home search really hard. I recommend working backwards. First, find the schools that you like best, and then search for homes specific to those schools. This made it so much easier. We ultimately settled in the Cleveland area of Clayton and love it. Lots of new subdivisions with tons of families. Of all the places we've lived, this is easily our favorite. We have fantastic neighbors, it was so easy for us and our kids to make friends, our house is beautiful and affordable, and we get the small town feel while still being close to shopping.

We love Garner. You school check out the plans they have for our new downtown. It's going to be great. We live in North Garner and honestly, I wish I had moved a little further into Garner rather than being closer to SE Raleigh. The schools on the other side of town are better performing, but like Lass mentioned the new school board is trying to move us in a better direction. For me Garner is the perfect small town. It's a great place to raise a family. I reminds me of Cary in the early 90's, before it turned into the monster that it is today. I don't know much about Clayton, but Garner is great.

If these are your only two options (Cary and Apex are much better choices IMO), I'd definitely choose Clayton. I offered a very frank description of my experience while living 2 years in Garner. I would NEVER EVER recommend Garner to anyone moving to the area. I will say it is definitely not as safe as Cary/Apex.
