Honestly, I wouldn't say there are any bad elementary schools in Clayton.
or ones to avoid.

I agree! The schools out are are amazing. My daughter attended West Clayton. First day of 3rd grade she could barely read Dr. Seuss. Last day of 3rd grade she was reading in a 6th grade level!

This year she will attend Cooper and I have heard nothing but rave reviews from the neighbors.

My two boys (5 and 8) are at River Dell Elementary and we couldn't be happier! It really is an amazing school. Great on academics, responsive, greatly encourages parent involvement (our elem in Cary didn't), accentuates positive behavior through a school wide reward system, great school spirit, etc, etc, etc.
