To paraphrase someone, you're off-track.

Yes, Essex County has local city taxing authorities (so does Wake). For about the past 10 years there has been a concentrated movement in Essex for local municipalities to share services - public works, water & sewer, trash/recycling, emergency services, etc., etc. But dare mention consolidating schools districts .

So it would probably do the world a lot more good if Colbert used his national audience to rally for reform in his own backyard. Heck, Newark, NJ has one of the highest poverty rates in the country and is only about 5-6 miles from him.

Stop the hypocrisy and walk the walk. But I guess he, Arne Duncan, the A&P, etc. get better mileage giving half-baked stories across the country.

I thought this was about Wake County? Maybe this thread needs to be moved to one of the New Jersey forums . . .

I know, right. Why do we keep talking about Colbert's kids and New Jersey?

Right, right, but I said "good examples other than Montclair". Do you know of any that are comparable to Wake? Just so we can see how other states are doing it and seeing what works and doesn't?

It was brought up because the vocal minority jumped on the Colbert bandwagon.
Some of us thought that it was naive to jump on a hypocrite's bandwagon when his goal is to rile his troops, not solve issues pertaining to the WCPSS.
But, you already know this.

Mecklenburg County, Charlotte NC, is a good example of the other school system, with similar test results to student performance as Raleigh's busing system. Around the country you can find other examples as well. The issue is political around changing the status quo, more than any issue with the changes being detrimental to students imo.

Meck Co. used to bus as well, but moved to neighborhood schools. There was similar debate, but testing showed an improvement to minority test scores after the change - partly do to improved focus on underperforming students - something that is possible when you don't spread the problem out. Last year Meck Co. was nationally awarded for its good work with improving poor/minority education in the district, yet Wake is being blasted for following that path... Take it for what you will, but its not like we're looking at the end of the world if Wake Co. goes to a neighborhood school system.

Our current council wasn't just voted in for neighborhoods schools, there were also the issues around school locations, year-round schedules, and a host of other issues that the old SB pretty much ignored public opinion on.

Mayor Meeker? the mayor who refuses to enforce laws in his city that he doesn't agree with.

Why should I care what he thinks? Tell me why our tax dollars should be spent on making Raleigh a "sanctuary city'? How does that serve the people of Raleigh?

His wife is on the school board! So instead of respecting voters who didn't like the way things were being handled -- what does he do? Addresses the media to ask for local businessses and community organization to change things. Why not look at the policies that made people so angry to begin with? Those same policies is why they were tossed our of office...

Yet the news report doesn't bring any of that up.

Maryland and Virginia have county government and county schools many with issues comparable to Wake. Yes they have neighborhood schools. Racial balance has played a role in some of the districts when it came time to redistricting schools. In others it has never played a role. There were issues with how Wake was doing pupil assignment prior to the election of the new board and anyone following the topic might remember I was often critical of them. That being said this board has done a miserable job of managing the change and the districting issue is about all they have done in the last year. They have a significant budget issue to tackle and right now are they ready for that? We probably should stay away from other states as thats what get threads in trouble with the Mod's. We both know Essex County and Wake ain't Essex.

If this is a racial issue, let's break it down on racial lines.

then the discussion will get somewhere.
