Hi,

Looking for recommendations for a day trip for skiing. I grew up skiing in upstate New York and New England and know the skiing here will be different.

However, I'd like to get my kids out on the slopes locally before we travel North or West.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I like Wintergreen in Virginia for a close trip. It is about 3 hours away. Wintergreen Resort

Agree that Wintergreen is a good choice. Pick a weekday if at all possible as crowds are typically substantially smaller.

head up to some of the resort towns like Banner Elk near Boone or head up into the Virginia mountains.

More like 3 1/2 hrs +, but Appalachian Ski Mountain in Blowing Rock/Boone is a nice small resort that's good for beginners. Sugar or Beech are the other resorts near that area, and are slightly bigger than Appalachian. As you said, probably not what you're used to, but great for beginners.

At 1200', Sugar has more vertical than Wintergreen. But, there is very little advanced terrain at Sugar. Wintergreen has a nice little area called the Highlands which is all intermediate/advanced (it's marked all as black and above, but it really isn't that much).

Wintergreen's definitely the best bet for a day trip. You should also try to get to Snowshoe if you can make a weekend trip.

If you go to Wintergreen, you might want to look into taking a bus up there (I'm always a fan of not having to drive!) Slope & Sail Tours has a bus that goes up there I think 6 days a week. Leave early in the morning and return in the late evening. Saves you the hassle of having to drive!

Wintergreen is the best (I think) within 3 hours. I am going on the 28th for 4 days. Can't wait. We go there every year at a couple times. My family owns a place on the slopes there.
