Hi all, Yesterday I got caught in a speed trap along 401, near the prison. Officer gave me a "reduced" citation of going 9 miles over the speed limit. He says this won't give me any insurance points.
What are y'alls experience with this/
I know that if anyone knows, it's the folks on CD.
Maybe. Maybe not. Traditionally 9 over was no insurance points and no rate increase.
My agent advises that certain insurance companies are starting to look at pulling things like "safe driver discounts" for any violations.
When I took a NEW "no left turn" into the North Hills Mall I was given a citation and was told the same thing that it would not raise insurance premium etc. But, guess what? My insurance company removed my safe driver discount and the premium got raised for the next three years

I think you were mis-informed. There is no exception for turning violations to keep you from getting an insurance point. The only exceptions are:
1. Speeding 10 mph or less in excess of limit, provided it's not in a school zone
2. Each at-fault accident that results in total damage of $ 1,800.00 or less and no other moving violation in connection with the accident
Your moving violation, not falling under one of the exceptions listed above, would count 1 point and you are subject to a 25% rate increase for 3 years.

Insurers would have to get permission from the North Carolina Department of Insurance to run a scheme like that. The "Safe Driver Incentive Plan" is regulated by the state; it is not up to individual insurance companies to determine how to implement it. It may be true that insurance companies are lobbying for the state government to relax the rules, especially in light of the new republican majority, but as of today it would be against the law to surcharge for an exempted violation. If my insurance company tried to do that to me, I would file a complaint with the Department of Insurance and find a new insurance company.
I believe that a "trap" is construed as going from a 45 to 35 with no "reduced speed ahead" signs and the cop is sitting right at or near the 35 sign.
Sounds like you were speeding. Block and a half later is irrelevant if you were still in the 35 zone.
