Hi, my family and I are looking to move to the Triangle Area from CT. We are in the pizza business here, and are wondering if people enjoy non-chain, "New York style" pizza in Raleigh. There are a couple for sale in the area that we will be visiting, but would love to hear some feedback from anyone out there. Thanks!

Well, the expatriate New Yorkers on this board seem to never shut up about how there isn't any good pizza in NC, so sounds like there'd be a demand

From a search I found some people like Lilly's and some like a few places near Falls of Neuce Road (spelling?). And I know, New Yorkers just complain out of habit about pizza in other places. They want that nice crunch on the crust. People say its something in the water that effects the dough, but I don't think that's true. I live in CT and have had great pizza here too, and a lot of people use well water, totally different than city water, especially Manhattan water.

I don't know about NY style specifically, but there is more to life than one style of pizza, right? There is Lily's, but that place is often mobbed. Capital Creations come to mind as a good pizza place. To a lesser extent, ZPizza (organic, chain) and Mellow Mushroom (small chain). I wish Raleigh had a Wolfman Pizza... but thats more west coast style. I don't think I'm helping with the quest for NY-style, but at least we have many different styles here.

Nope. I'm a "the more unusual, the better" kinda guy. I tend to go for the California Pizza Kitchen/Z-Pizza/Amante's style.

Wife can only eat gluten-free pizza.

Kids eat plain old pepperoni

I believe you'll find folks are open to family run pizza places. Good product will have an audience in the right location.
Many transplants here ....

Never been there, but after looking at their menu, I agree

Good to know. I consider this a marketing question. It lets me know what people like/don't like. I don't want to limit myself to just one type of pizza. Thanks for the comments.

To answer your basic question: Yes, there is a well established base of customers who appreciate good pizza from indy joints. That being said, as you well know everybody and their brother claims to be an expert on what qualifies as being "good" pizza.

Based on my experiece here over the past five years, the indy pizza places that I have witnessed succeed have the following in common:

1) They make a quality product
2) They are in a good location
3) Offer a competetive price with good customer service

Whether you sell NYC style pizza, upstate NY, Chicago, California style, whatever, I think as quality pizza in a good location can do well.

Please don't fall into the trap of wallpapering your joint with NY Yankee posters and signed photos of Tony Saprano. If you sell NY style pizza, people will know this by how good your product is. You don't need to convince them with NY flare.

Me? I like Bella Italia in North Raleigh off Durant near Falls of Neuse Road. Is it perfect? No, but I find it to be pretty darn good and enjoy their pie. I'm willing to appreciate that others may favor other local joints.
