Well, I've taken a break because DH has gotten leads from all sorts of places, but now it looks like it may be down to either Raleigh, Wilson or Greenville. If we have our choice, what should we choose?
Thanks all for your help. Will be doing some more sleuthing.....

as in commuting to the intersection of route 1/540? if so, i'd eliminate greenville alone on that one. wilson could be doable. i doubt you'd find $250K acreage in raleigh unless someone knows more than me.

I'm a bit confused here too ... but I'll throw this out -

On NC 98 just west of NC 50 you get to "Raleigh" addresses that actually border/cross into Durham County. Largely rural, watershed zoning that is 10-15 minutes from RT 1.
Much of this land is outside subdivisions on land that allows horses, etc.
I've seen 2-5 acre lots with small, sometimes mobile, homes in your price range.
