The area south of Roxboro and north of Durham isn't called horse country for nothing. It is beautiful with great housing possibilities. No need to drive so many miles to live well.
As for the schools, the previous messages have had some good information. Start with
www.NCReportCards.com for profiles of the schools. Many schools also have their own websites. Then visit the schools and talk to parents and teachers. Think about it; Duke University, including the med and law schools and hospital system, has many well-educated employees and students. Their children will be attending the schools in that area as many of them live there. Also, think about the colleges and universities we have here. Most of the local children end up in those schools. Local lower level educations are geared to transitioning to those schools. (Your children will have access at in-state rates to those top-notch schools, too.)
You will be working in a small hospital in a small town, but it is not the end of the earth. You will love it here and so will your kids, if you give it a chance.
