A good friend of mine is having a baby and I wanted to buy her a nice gift before the baby arrives. She prefers organic and eco-friendly products. Any recommendations of a store that would have a good selection of these types of products nearby? I live in Cary.
i tend to find unique handmade gifts to be a good fit for most of my friends. many mamas out there have small handmade item businesses. you might want to check out the handmaidens, who host the handmade market twice a year (although they just had their last sale may 1st). i've bought several gift items (wedding, baby, birthday) from them in person at these sales.
you can do a search for eco-friendly baby items & find many of them. i realize you can't go in person & look at them, but i've never had bad luck with anything i've ordered.
you can also do a search on etsy for local raleigh shops (some of which may have actual stands or sell at the farmer's market or raleigh flea market or other handmade fairs of that sort).
You might want to see if she is using cloth diapers. The all-in-ones and some of the specialty ones are pricey, so she might appreciate some extras. I have only bought cloth diaper items online, I've never seen any in stores.
I know there are a few baby and expectant mom boutiques in Cameron Village in Raleigh (near enough to Cary), but I haven't been to any so I'll let someone else comment on these. You could check Whole Foods- they have various baby items. If she isn't due soon, maybe you can find something at Lazy Daze, there are many vendors that sell handmade baby items (it is in August).
Cloth diapers are a great gift if the mom is planning to use them. In addition to Greenpea, other local stores that carry them include Goodmammas in Raleigh and The Red Hen in Carrboro (also a nice source for local eco-friendly gifts as well as used clothing). If you're looking for a particular brand or style, call ahead before going, as most stores only carry a limited number of brands.
good call on cloth diapers. if you're not sure (& she's not sure) what cloth diapers she may be using, you could get her a selection of prefolds, pockets, all-in-ones, & covers so that she could try out what works best for her & baby. there are also some online cloth diaper sites (like kelly's closet Cloth Diapers Store - Cloth Diapers Covers, bumGenius Cloth Diapers, Smartipants, FuzziBunz Cloth Diapers, for example) that allow you to purchase gift certificates/cards so that they can select what they like.
(i promise i shop at real stores sometimes, too, but i know several friends who swear by kelly's closet. since i'm not a mom yet, i haven't had to purchase for myself, but i have given giftcards for such things.)
You may also want to check out the Women's Birth and Wellness Boutique (across the hall from the birthing center) in Chapel Hill. They have many items I'm sure your friend would like:
