Yesterday the City Council approved plans to retrofit the Dillon Supply Warehouse downtown into the new Union Station for Raleigh. You can see details of the plan here: http://dtraleigh.com/images/unionsta...Assessment.pdf
The current station is way too small for the amount of passengers it funnels so this looks like a step in the right direction.
If commuter trains come, that would be awesome. The ability for these outer cities get downtown easily would do wonders. Being in Apex, Cary or Fuquay and having a direct route to downtown/Glenwood/NCSU would be nice. Assuming the cost is low and the time is fast enough.
The track for the Richmond route has already started to be laid. That will be great when that finishes up. Wouldn't mind taking the train to my business trips in DC more often!
How does all teh Amtrack stuff work? Are there any easy places to get to for a mini vacation with a special lady? Something for one day, something for three days perhaps? Amtracks website is confusing, how do you folks use the trains? Thanks!

This is incorrect. The SEHSR (South East High Speed Rail) project between Raleigh and Richmond hasn't even been funded yet. The only track work now underway between Raleigh and Richmond is a very small project in Petersburg, Va. that will allow Amtrak to run trains into Norfolk. There are other, relatively small projects underway between Charlotte and Raleigh but nothing of the magnitude of SEHSR.

There are two routes run by NCRR. The first is the Piedmont, which runs from Raleigh to Charlotte twice a day (leaving Raleigh fat 6:45am and 11:45am, Charlotte at noon and 5:15PM). The second route is the Carolinian, which links Charlotte to Penn Station in NY. This route can also be used to connect Raleigh to Charlotte, leaving Raleigh for Charlotte at 4:50PM and Charlotte at 7:00am. This means we have 3 daily travels between Charlotte and Raleigh, stopping in between at places like Cary, Durham, Greensboro, and others.
The trip from Raleigh to NYC takes about 10 hours, or one hour longer than driving will. The train for NYC leaves Raleigh at 10:25AM (it's just the 7:00am train from Charlotte continuing onward). I'm not sure how often it's on time to NYC, though. The routes within NC (Raleigh to Charlotte) have been running on time lately, because about a year ago some track maintenance was done to get the route back on time. It's 3 hrs 10 min to get from Raleigh to Charlotte, which is still a little bit longer than driving, but you can relax during the trip. The trains are very nice on the inside.
One thing to know is that in Charlotte there's no direct connection between Amtrak and their light rail. Charlotte's planning on moving their Amtrak station south to be right next to a light rail station, but the funding hasn't been found yet. Still, when you get to Charlotte you can take a taxi or bus about a mile and then be on their light rail and travel around for the day seeing the sights.
