It's costing me more than $7 a day to drive to work - this is where I wish we had viable public transportation!
By viable you might as well be referencing the New York City system. You'd be spending about the same amount on a round-trip ride on the subway without the added convenience of coming and going as you please while having to deal with the wide assortment of characters that frequent such places. And it's not just a NYC things - when I was in Houston last year I used their rail system and the people riding with me made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight.

Actually I was thinking more of the Washington DC metro system - I used it for more than a few years when I lived there and it worked quite well. Plus my employer subsidizes people who ride public transit, so there'd be a definite savings for me.

I was a user of NJ Transit, PATH and NY subway system for 15 years. I never had an issue with safety.
Unless you are taking the train into the worst parts of NYC, you will feel safe.
BTW, I loved that I didn't have to sit in traffic. The overall commute time did not change drastically, but I arrived in a much better state of mind.
I just hope that any sacrifice we make in terms of higher gas prices pays off in freedom for people who have been living under despotic regimes in the Middle East.
Isn't there an app for that? Gas watch? Something that tells you where the lowest prices in town are....
Gas Buddy is the one I use on my IPhone.
