I live in NW Raleigh and my lease is up in June. I'm looking to move closer to downtown, hopefully within walking distance of Cameron Village and/or Glenwood South. I see on Craigslist that Country Club Homes has some availability in my price range, but upon researching them I also see they were purchased a few years ago by another company with hopes of tearing them down. Does anyone know what the plan is for these apartments? If they are not being torn down and therefore are something I continue to look into, are there any current or past residents who can recommend or not recommend living there? I'm a 28 year old female, and safety is definitely high on my list.

Hi! I don't live there, but live in the area. I thought I'd reply to bump up the thread. I've had many friends live there (single women, couples, etc.) in their 20s/30s and they have enjoyed it. There are some people who have been living there for decades, too, which is cool. All of my female friends who have lived there alone never said anything about feeling unsafe. They like being able to walk to Five Points, Red Dragon (chinese place), etc. If I were you, I'd look at some available units to see if you like the older feel of the apartments. The units are definitely dated, but have "charm". I've heard some have been kept up better than others. The location is great!

I honestly thought they were projects when I first moved to Raleigh. Had I known that they were NOT, I possibly would have looked into moving there--my job was right across the street!
I think that entire area is neat, and it growing at lightning speed. I just discovered the cupcake shop over near there yesterday!

They just tore down and rebuilt across the street from those, so those very well may be next. I would look at Drucker & Falk properties. They also have good locations, old style, charm buildings, but you won't have to worry about a tear down. Try Shamrock Apts, Raleigh Apts, Wedgwood Apts, and St. Mary's Apts.

Nearly four years ago when we were looking to move from NW Raleigh closer to downtown, I looked into Country Club Homes Apts. When I went into the leasing office, the nice lady told me that they had been purchased by a developer (Grubb, I think) who had plans to tear them down and build high-end 55+ housing. She said that unless I was looking for a short-term lease, I should probably pass on them because they were expecting the work to begin within six months. (I looked at one of the apartments anyway just to see what they were like. They're definitely older, but charming. My main concern would be energy efficiency, but I've lived in similar places and know how to cope.)
Well, it has been almost four years now, and they are still around. At the same time I looked at CCH, the apartments across the street were still being rented out, but they were clearly farther along in the transition process, with some already vacant. Those have now been renovated and turned into larger attached condos. To me it would be a shame to lose even more affordable rental housing in this area, but I'm sure the developer still plans to tear them down once the housing market picks back up.
I would call the leasing office and ask for the timeline. I don't know if you'll get someone as honest as the person I spoke to, but it's worth a try. Otherwise, check out the properties that swok09 mentioned, and also check craigslist for condos for rent around Cameron Village (there are some cute older ones that people rent out).

I just drove by these the other day! Country Club still seems alive and kicking... When I first saw these apartments, I fell in infatuation.
So much character. Excellent location. But I, too, thought they were subsidized housing and/or restricted to a certain demographic (elderly/disabled). Wouldn't mind checking out a unit just for kicks. Seems kinda pricey for an eyeballed estimation of what the square footage is ...Not sure of what the market rate is right now.
Anybody ever live in these or know anyone who has?

The location is what makes them pricey.
I've had friends who lived there over the years. None recently, so I dunno what they are like now.

It's the location with respect to Five Points (walkability) that drives the price. I used to rent a couple houses down from the old Wachovia (now Wells Fargo) over on Fairview. Not cheap.

Raleigh had a fire chief that lived there many many years. I think it would be great to live there someday when we're ready to get away from upkeep on house and yard. I hope they're still there when that time comes.
