We're finally packing for our mid-August move to Cary and would love to hear feedback re: experiences with local NY/NJ moving companies. Anyone willing to recommend their mover based on positive experience? I've cross referenced our research with movingscam.com but would also like a 'heads-up' on local companies we should avoid.

Thanks in advance for suggestions.
Nikki

Avoid A-Topp's Moving.

The guys who picked up our stuff (we moved from NY to cary ourselves) were wonderful.

The guys that dropped it off were absolutely horrid.

My desk was completely destroyed, and 90% of our boxes had massive tears/holes in them. Some were baseball sized holes!

So avoid them.

Default Thanks for the feedback..another question...

I also meant to ask how long it took for folks to receive their belongings. Trying to decide if we should plan to stay in a hotel for the first few days or if we should plan to ship our stuff about a week earlier than our arrival date.

Thanks again! Nikki

Hi,

We moved from NJ 11 months ago and used All Season's Movers in Kearny. They are affiliated with one of the three big movers either Alliant or United--can't remember which right now. They were not the cheapest around but I had heard great things about them and our move was fantastic!

We used them to pack us as well as from start to finish they did a wonderful job. I have recommended them to a lot of friends who have used them since. They packed our house on a Monday, loaded the truck on Tuesday, traveled on Wednesday and unloaded in NC on Thursday, so we just stayed overnight in a hotel for one night. The number is 201-997-8034.

Good luck!
Taryn

My fiance and I recently moved from md and rented a budget truck ourselves and drove with truck attached to back as well. It was easier and we stayed at hotel with it the night before our closing on our house.

We moved from ny to brevard . DON"T use Benhur. To move from Brevard to Cary we used a company that just rents you the van and drives it,you have to hire someone to load it(craigslist). the drivers were awesome,it was cheaper than hiring a moving company and nothing got broken. They even send you a dvd with packing instructions. google that type of mover if you're interested. Im sorry ,i don't recall the name.

Bohrens United van Lines in Parsippany moved us and we were *very* happy. We had Tony from Bloomfield as a driver, and extrememly happy with him too.

Just stay away from the web moving brokers - scams abound there.

Try American Moving and Storage assn website for honest movers.

Thumbs up Moving Co recommendation

We moved from northern NJ to Raleigh 3 months ago. We used an agent of Allied Van Lines -- Berger in Ramsey NJ. They were the lowest quote -- which was a bit concerning. But they did a great job and all of our belongings made it in tact. For about $6,500 they packed our belongings and transported them to Raleigh (our NJ home was about 2200 sq feet).
