Hello, my first post here. I am relocating to the Cary/Apex area with my wife and a toddler. We have engaged a real estate agent to help us find a single family home (rent for 1 year to figure out the area). They have stated that the rental market is very hot, we need to move quick, and do not use CraigsList.

I wonder if they are trying to pressure us, or if the statements are true? Appreciate any insights!

Thanks, Lou

It definitely is. I helped my father rent out one his units on craigslist and we got FLOODED with emails and people who wanted to see the place.

Extremely hot from what we've seen. We're also moving to the area in May and had considered renting, but due to what we could get for the money we decided to buy. Good luck!

Craigslist is a good place to look if you use due diligence. I know many people, both owners/agents and renters, use it legitimately and effectively. But if you are totally unfamiliar with the area, an agent can be very helpful.

Craigslist is really annoying...lots of misleading ads for big apartment complexes and not near as many Mom and Pop renters as you might want.

I have been perusing rentals since December with a goal to rent as of July 1, and IMHO inventory is low right now.

I would not hesitate to work with a realtor. If your landlord lives out of town, who will you call when you need something?

Most out-of-town landlords have local contacts for repairs if needed.

It's not uncommon.

^^I know many many people who have used Craigslist sucessfully, myself included. Yes, in a free and open market, you have to be willing to endure certain chaos and use a generous dose of discretion.

I have used Craigslist with success. However, one other avenue you might try is to call people who are trying to sell their house and ask if they would consider offering it for rent. If it's been sitting on the market for months (or longer!), they might go ahead with that so they aren't stuck watching their money run out the door with their mortgage check each month. I have a friend who drove around the neighborhood he wanted to live in, called three houses that were for sale, and all three of them said yes to renting!

I hope the market is hot, because I will be renting out my house this summer. Decent neighborhood just north of the beltline... would rather sell, but the market is so weak right now...

I hate moving.

IMO I would stay away from Craigslist for renting or buying a home. There are a lot of unscrupulous people on there, not all, but many. I would trust in the many qualified real estate agents in the area. I would do the same if you would like to rent or sell your home. Just my $0.02
