Does anyone know of a lawnmower/hardware store that has a good selection of reel mowers and allows to you "test drive" them (push them around on some grass)? Preferably near Apex/Cary, but if it's a great store then we'd be willing to drive further. Thanks.

Home Depot sells a good Lawn Boy self-propelled mower for under $300, no test drive.

That is not a REEL mower.

To the OP-my experience with reel mowers included buying one online and subsequently selling it on Craigslist after becoming frustrated with it. I had a relatively small yard that was completely level with Bermuda Grass-I was the perfect candidate for a reel mower.

I bought an American Lawn Mowers model 1705-16. It is a 7 blade design for creeping grasses like Bermuda or Zoysia. It was the highest rated one I could find. it was well built and pretty inexpensive (around $120 I think).

The mower caught on every little imperfection or uneven spot on the lawn. It wouldn't work when the grass was anything but completely dry. Any little twig would jam it. I tried very hard to get it to work but ended up going back to my gas mower.

Your experience may vary, but that was mine. Good luck!

Are you looking for a gas powered reel mower? I was looking for one a while back but discovered they were very hard to come by and super expensive, mostly over $1,000. I did come across one at Sears for 599.99 that got decent reviews. Not sure about the test drive though.

Are you talking about a mower like this, and where you can try it out?

I've got a half acre of grass. Buy a mower and you can come to my house to test drive it!

Be warned, you should only get a reel mower if you have bermuda grass. If you have fescue a reel mower will not allow you to cut it to the height fescue needs to stay at during the summer 3"-4".

A reel mower works great with zoysia - in fact I think that's the kind of mower recommended for it. It does take a lot of patience to use one though! I also had a reel mower when I lived in a townhouse - perfect for the miniscule front yard I had at the time.

Give me a zero-turn riding mower with a cup holder and I'm happy. I don't even break a sweat anymore. After 18 years of using a push mower in TX, I'd had enough of that.
