I am currently living in Raleigh NC but miss my family back in the Hudson Valley Middletown, New York area. I was considering moving back to Middletown with my 3 yo son but I've heard that it's not the same as when I left 7 yrs ago. Just wondering if anyone had any ideas of a small town that is within maybe 2 hours of the Middletown area that would be good to raise my 3 yo son in. Affordable home, good schools and of course jobs are a must. I had read one of the comments made about the Finger Lakes Region in Canandaigua ny that sounded great but don't know how far that would be. Help any advice would be helpful.

Hi Crystle -
I'm actually doing the opposite move...I currently live in Canandaigua and am moving to Raleigh! I went to college in Poughkeepsie so I'm familiar with the Hudson Valley as well. Canandaigua is beautiful, it would be about 4/4.5 hours from Middletown. It's an easy drive on Route 17 (new I-86) between them. Canandaigua is great 3 seasons of the year, but I don't like snow and winters are MUCH worse here than they are in the Hudson Valley. That's my main reason for moving south! Schools here are great, but Canandaigua is not a big city so there sometimes isn't much to do. The lake & parks are great in the summer, there is also a water park. It's definitely getting more "built up" since a new super walmart, Lowes, Applebees, and Panera all moved in at one end of town. There aren't many jobs in Canandaigua itself...most people work in Rochester and the surrounding suburbs. The Rochester job market can be tough depending on the field you are in. Housing and cost of living is very affordable, it is much less expensive than the Hudson Valley for sure. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions!

I know a fella who came down here when Kodak started mass layoffs.

Is there much good work left in upstate NY? Just noticed that Oneida and Corningware products were outsourced to Asia.
