Jump Roping is not too common here in the South but our school is offering it and I am thinking about letting my daughters(3rd and 4th grade in the fall) join up. I know if I contact the sponsors or coaches at the school I would probably only be given the positives. So I'm wondering if other parents with kids in jump roping would tell me about this sport, what it entails, how expensive it is, any negatives as well as positives.
Many thanks.

Jump roping isn't too common in the south?
The best jump roping club in the country is based out of Chapel Hill....
The Bouncing Bulldogs have been around for about 20 years and have been national champions for something like 7-8 years straight...
My daughters have several friends involved with the sport, it is time consuming typically with early morning workouts similar to skating or swimming. If the child is very good and wants to compete there can be significant travel involved....
My daughters are heavily involved with travel soccer and I don't believe the costs and time committment yet rival those of soccer but it can add up with camps, travel, etc...
Yeah, jump rope teams are VERY popular in the south! My daughter did jump rope club at at school and it cost me $5.00 for a bead rope! They did the Cary Christmas Parade and several other events. The local teams travel to competitions! I can't think of any negatives!
Gotta say they are awesome to watch in the parades! I'm impressed enough that they have the stamina to jump rope for so long... but while walking?! Seems like a great way to keep your kids fit!
oops- thought I was posting this in the parenting forum. I'm on my second set of kids 20 years apart so jump roping is new to me. I'm in Chapel Hill actually so I'm glad it is so popular here. I'll get some more info and let them decide. Afraid my rope jumping days are long gone. I'm sure I would break my neck-or other body parts- if I even tried.
Quite a few elementary schools participate in the Jump Rope for the heart program..
