I have a healthy respect for them. It makes me nervous to be at risk in the evening as it's not possible to see them. I hope the storm is out of here before dark.

Here's some good info for newcomers compiled by NCSU on tornadoes in this area and ave #'s for our area. Raleigh Tornado

Basements are rare here, especially in newer homes (and by newer, I mean 1980's to present). You'll often find basements in inside-the-beltline homes and in high end (or very high end) homes.

Nothing makes me happier than having a closet under the stairs in our walkout basement family room (in our "old" 1968-era home). At least it's something.

I would freak out if we didn't have it. I'm also glad we have a weather alert radio.

If we have weather as bad as the recent ones in the South, remember the three most important things in case the electricity goes out: flashlight, battery-operated or crank radio, and pre-grind your coffee!

Here's the link for WRAL Weather Call - maybe a little alarmist, but for $8/year they'll call you if a tornado warning is headed your way:

It is very hard to get used to no tornado sirens and no basements. Being from the midwest, I was used to hearing the sirens and camping out in the basement at least once a week during tornado season. We bought a weather radio so we can get the warning signals. Next best thing to the sirens.

We had that. Didn't get a call when we should have. We found a radio alert radio a better investment.

So, I live on the top floor, I guess I could jump into the bathtub and ride that down to the ground? With the dog? Maybe the squirrels that live in my ceiling could join us.
I am also in the camp that fears storms, but you totally cracked me up with you last statement. I laughed so loud I scared myself!
