Coinstar coin change machines charge 9%.

Is there any other place where one change a pot of coins to cash? If it's a bank let me know which one. I have accounts at wachovia, crescent state bank & coastal credit union.

Coastal has it - but I'm not sure if all branches have it - and they charge 5%. Next time I need to turn in change I'll save it for a trip north, you can turn it in for free at TDBank.

Coinstar will do it with no fee if you get the money on certain giftcards, if that will work for you.

If you take the coins and put them into rolls yourself and take them to your bank, do they charge for that?

No, but I think the whole reason for the machines is to keep people from having to do that. I used to love to wrap coins, but admit that the machines are os much easier and just as "cool".

OP: I belong to the State Employees' Credit Union and it is free there for members. If you know someone who is a member, maybe they would let you go and have them do it (the machines gives you a credit that is then deposited into an account) and they could write you a check or something. Maybe you can call an NCSECU and see what they do for non-members?

We've used the coin machines at Coastal Credit Union before and I'm pretty sure it was free.

I think the reason for the machines is that they make money! Maybe some of us should get together and buy one and install it in a grocery store and make 9% from those folks too lazy to roll their own coins!!!

I just finished saying that the ones at NCSECU are FREE for members = not making money. I have zero doubt that the purpose of the ones in grocery stores is that they make money, but the OP is asking for free ones. I am not positive of such a thing for the general public.
