I'm currently on unemployment. It's been very difficult now to land a job in Florida. I'm thinking that I still have a little cushion to give me some time to find employment in NC, if I decide to move there.
Yes, Fuquay and other bedroom communities here are more of what I would consider "rural" compared to the Ft. Lauderdale area. You would definitely want to be closer in to the city centers. Even Brier Creek, though quite suburban, has a lot of things nearby compared to Fuquay. North Hills is another more dense area. However, these areas are more autocentric whereas downtown is much more walkable. That said, it is still faster to get around here compared to S. FL due to less traffic problems. It takes less time to go the same distance than it would there.

There are a several decent city parks in the downtown Raleigh area (Fred Fletcher, Pullen Park, Chavis Park, etc.) as well as two squares (Moore and Nash) and smaller pocket parks in neighborhoods. Umstead State Park is about a 10-15 minute drive. Cameron Village offers a grocery store, drugstore and other shops within biking distance to downtown. It is an easy drive to North Hills and Crabtree Valley Mall for other shopping.

As for unemployment, definitely research this thoroughly. I haven't been paying close attention, but I think I've heard that NC unemployment benefits are not currently faring so well.

I've been reading a bit here lately about people relocating to NC from other states, and they've been told that they'd get a cost of living adjustment if they moved here.

And for most of them, that means less money, not more. Sooo... it's something to consider heavily. Good luck to you!
