I'm wondering how many people have made this drive.

Is there any benefit to detouring out to the Tidewater and taking the bridge/tunnel as a way to avoid the traffic and congestion on I 95 in the DC area?

I generally try to avoid Washington if I can, but I didn't know if taking this Eastern route would make the trip a lot longer if going all the way to AC. I think the bridge/tunnel is kind of interesting in and of itself, but my primary interest in this trip is time.

I appreciate all thoughts.

I did the side trip route before in about 2002. Got off 95 and did the eastern route with two lane roads, tunnels, bridges, ferries to Sea Isle City, NJ. It took 11.5 hours compared to the 8 it should have taken.

I'm afraid I95 to Philly then the AC Expressway across Jersey is the best way.
The Delaware/Cape May Ferry is nice in principle but not a time saver, especially heading north due to the required reservations.

I agree. We drive to Baltimore a few times a year to visit family. From Baltimore, we take the above mentioned route.

The best drive I ever had around DC was at 2:00 in the morning. I would do that again, if possible.

Agreed. I've spent the better part of the past decade driving up to NJ from either VA or NC and that is the way to go.

Definitely agree with this! We went through DC and Baltimore around midnight in January and it was a breeze.

I can't imagine anybody would ever recommend "the scenic route" to somewhere to someone who's "primary interest is time". Kind of the point of Interstates is to make the most direct route--though plan your timing around missing DC traffic, of course.

We take the Bay Bridge/Tunnel every me (in fact we are doing it this Fri.) to visit family. It takes 8 1/2-9 hrs. I agree leaving at midnight gets us to Atlantic County for breakfast arond 8:30. Timing is everything, coming back you do not want to be around Virgina Beach between 4:00 - 5:30 pm, thats hen you hit bumper to bumper traffic.

Thanks for the input, folks. Looks like 95 it is for this weekend anyway. I'll hit DC around 8:30 which isn't optimal, but better than the full on rush.

Can anyone give me an idea of what I'm looking at for tolls to AC? I usually jump off 95 onto 83 so I don't usually have to deal with the toll part of it.
