We have them in North Durham, although as others have said, the buzz/hum is actually almost like white noise to me. Makes me sleepy.
The yard is crawling with them. I just flick the shells into the yard & told hubby to put the lawn clippings in my compost bin. I have to imagine they will make good compost.
The Town of Cary sent out an alert last week but I jus noticed the sounds of the Cicadas today- This is my first year around the Cicadas - totally does sound like a car alarm is on all day! Had one one my deck this morning & they are freaky looking bugs too! How long are they around for & how long do they make their sounds? & are they harmless?

Only a couple weeks - they all come up at around the same time and they only live a week or two - I dont think they eat after they come up - sex....and die!!
These are actually the 13 year cicada brood. They come up from the ground every 13 years... very cool and very trippy. It sounds like a spaceship landed right here in Durham! My brother in CH, however, hasn't seen or heard them.
I have a couple thousand acres of woods behind me and it is a a real commotion out there! lol
