Considering a new job in RTP. We're wondering where the good schools(middle) are.Raleigh,Durham or Chapel Hill? We would like to rent a nice townhouse or condo, in a very good area, good schools and lots of fun things for a family to do. A short-ish commute to RTP would be nice. Don't really want to be in a neighborhood with mainly retirees or childless couples.
The burbs are fine , we're even thinking of trying to find an urban setting as long as our 11 year old has friends nearby. Also, is the YMCA big in NC? We like to swim, work out etc as a family. Thanks y'all!!!

Depends on what your criteria is for "good schools". Many people would say the Chapel Hill schools are best, and the Wake county schools used to be great, before all the overcrowding and redistricting. They also say the Durham schools are not very good, although more Durham schools have been getting National recognition lately than any of the others. There is a lot of debate about it. Yes, we have YMCA's here, along with all other types of places to work out and swim.

It also depends on the criteria for "short"ish when it comes to the RTP commute.

You mean "consistently short-ish?" Live near RTP. If "usually, more-often-than-not-short-ish" is doable then your options expand. Beware, traffic in the Triangle is a beast of Jekyll-and-Hyde proportions....and Hyde is scary.

I don't know what the satus is of this project, but it might be worth checking out if you are interested in a mixed-use development with condos within a short commute to RTP.

DAVIS PARK :: Live Life in the Park

Again, not sure if it suites you, but Kitts Creek is a popular choice with folks looking for a SFH close to RTP employers. Of course price is always a factor.

Many communities in this areas have their own swimming pools and like a previous poster indicated, YMCA is a popular choice here as well. Good Luck!

Default many townhomes have pools in the community

Many townhomes or condos for rent have a pool as part of the community. Some also have tennis courts and small workout rooms. If you look at apartment rental webites they will list the ammenities. Hopefully other people on this forum can recommend apartment complexes that have many families (instead of college student renters). I used to live in Alexan farms in Durham. They offer both apartments and townhomes. The schools assigned to that area are the best in Durham and the area was well kept. I loved the pool (May-Sept) and used the workout room for a quick workout often. I saw a lot of young families there (I can't remember how many pre-teens) Friends of ours lived in 82 Magnolia (I think that was the name) in Chapel Hill and their place was also very large and nice. Chapel Hill may be a nicer school district but also more expensive.
