I am headed there in the morning and none of the routes look great.
I am considering just going to Wilmington and south from there .
I don't really care if its 20 minutes more if its better roads and easier because I will get lost if there are tons of poorly marked road signs.
Yo Wilmington is around 4 hours from Charlotte. Myrtle beach is also arounf 4 hours from charlotte, Wilmington is at least one hour from Myrtle beach. Get a map and go through Darlington sc and follow the signs

I've gone that way and it really isn't that much slower, given all the interstate traffic on 95. It isn't that hard a route to manage and maybe if you are that worried about getting lost you should consider buying a GPS?
Here is the route we take. I live in East Raleigh and we get there right at the 3 hours mark. You're not on 95 for too long and there is some fairly interesting things to look at on the ride.
Take 95 South to Lumberton
Take 74 East for about 25 miles
Take a right on Highway 410 South (towards Chadbourn)
Stay on that road until it runs into 701 (ends at a stop sign)and there will be a sign that says Myrtle Beach. Take a right onto 701 and stay on that road for about 10 miles.
Take Highway 9 South. You will pass two car dealerships and you will know you are getting close. The exit ramp to 9 will be just under the bridge to the left.

Follow to Myrtle.
That's the route I like....quicker and with far less traffic lights. My wife prefers the 40 to 17 route.
The route shellsd posted is what I usually do, along with a variant: Take 87 South for 20 miles to Tar Heel, turn right onto NC 131 for 15 miles going to Bladenboro, then follow 410 South to Chadbourn and the rest of the route listed. 87 is four lanes and lightly travelled, especially not during rush hours, and while Bladenboro can be a little pain to go through with the low speed limits, the location is pushing you closer to the beach to hear those radio stations earlier, which I like to do. Takes about the same time as the shellsd route.
