I used to live in Falls River, next to Bedford, and rode a lot just north of there, including on Falls of Neuse Rd. The roads north of Hwy 98 are great for cycling.

I now live in northern Durham and have found the roads of northern Durham and Orange County to be even better...beautiful rolling hills and pastoral farmland with some decent climbs and very little traffic out in the country.

Hard to beat Chapel Hill. While the eastern part of the Triangle sprawls on and on, development in Orange County is quite restricted. Great riding west and north of town, major routes include Mt Sinai (biggest hills in the area, I think), Cornwallis, Dairyland and New Hope Church rds. Not as familiar with the routes south of 54, but also miles and miles of hilly country rds south west of town running down towards the Haw River. Safe, easy access to these routes out your door as long as you are west/north of 15/501 and 54.
