Pretty much everywhere. I realize there is a lot of development, but it's not like the entire region is Manhattan like.
There are 640 acres in a square mile. The OP said "multi-thousand acres", which implies several square miles. With the exception of parks like Umstead (5500+ acres), I am not aware of many multi-square mile contiguous areas of woods.
Op said Bonsol area...Unless those sneaky Cary Town planners are hiding it behind some trees and micro signs, I'd say it's not in this area and maybe not in our state
