My husband and I both work from home in IT. We are bored to tears in our current location - Peachtree City, GA and are considering a move to the Triangle. A close family member moved to Durham about 5 years ago and loves it. We are considering following suit.

We used to live in Alexandria, VA and enjoyed the diversity, the pace, and the abundance of entertainment, dining, shopping options.

We have a bunch of kids ranging from preschool to highschool so schools and kids' activities are high on our list. We would really like to live in an area within walking distance of shopping/dining.

Because we both work from home, we can really live anywhere, but need to be reasonbly close to a major airport. We need a house with 4+ bedrooms and our budget is up to a max of $465,000. We spend alot of time at home so the closely surrounding area is really important to us.

So - Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill? Or scrap the Triangle altogether?

Raleigh is family friendly but not an enormous number af nearby activities.

I'd put it on my list but not at the top.

Default Triangle Great Place to Live

I would put the Triangle at the top of my list so many positives and very few negatives. Great Schools, Outdoor Activities, Beach, Mountains, Variety of Places to see and much more

Search for homes in 27605. It's a small zip area near Cameron Village and NC State University in Raleigh. The homes are at a premium there but it's location, location, location that drives the prices.

By abundance of activities, I mean lots of everything. Malls - plural, diverse dining options, bars with different atmospheres, adult & youth recreation and organized sports, summer camps, wine tasting, movie theatres, stage performances, comedy nights, museums, parks, playgrounds. The kind of area my teens could walk to the movies or lunch during the summer.

Yes - we have all of that but much of it requires driving. I do a lot of driving. <smile>

North Hills might be a good area to start with - near the newly renovated mall would give your kids some independence without a car. Otherwise, you can look downtown Raleigh as another post suggested but you won't get everything on the list -- unless you look in the ncstate/meredith areas -- things are a bit more walkable there. You also might look at Carrboro - it has been stated as walkable -- but not too sure how much would interest teens. The best thing to do is come on over and visit.

We have everything below in the Triangle except the walkability.

The Triangle is a car-based society.

Of course, some neighborhoods are more "walkable" than others, but I can't think of any that are that close to all kinds of activities. Maybe North Hills in Raleigh; there's a movie theater there.

Teen chauffering doesn't last that long. They eventually get their licenses.

I like living here, but it's nothing like Alexandria VA.
