Am I the only one who is ready for fall? I don't want to complain because I'm totally happy to be here, but can it get any freaking hotter??

But seriously, my in-laws want to visit us from Germany. When would be the best time for them to come here? They like to enjoy the outdoors, hiking, biking, going to the mountains, etc. They don't, and I repeat, DO NOT like to sit around the house. Can I bank on October for being relatively nice, not too hot, good color change and all that jazz? Or should we push it back to November?

What do all the natives and semi-natives think? Thanks!

I'm no native but I just want to use this opportunity to rant: it is hotter here than where I lived in FLORIDA.

This is a serious heat wave we are having the last 2 weeks. We had milder than normal weather earlier in the summer. Sept and October are usually perfect times around here.

Sandy, October should be a great time for them to visit. The heat will certainly have broken by then & the leaves will have begun to change. I bet the mountains would be gorgeous at that time!

Scorp, it's funny you say that because today I noticed that the thermometer in my car said that it was 99F outside & my first thought was, "At least it isn't as hot as it was when I was in Florida last month!"

The first week of August is usually the worst. More than likely things will start getting a bit cooler within a week or two.

My favorite time in the Triangle is late October. The leaves are usually changing, but it is not yet very cold. You might need a jacket in the evening, though. Late September to early October is also nice. It is slightly warmer, but still slightly cool. And you get lots of green as the trees haven't changed.

I'm SO ready for fall - or at least cooler temperatures. Then again, I've always hated the heat - which is why I'm glad to no longer be living in Houston.

Sandycat, the weather will definitely be cooler in October. As far as color change, it depends - are you looking for fall colors here, or will you be going to the mountains? The mountains usually have the colors before we do.

My best friend came to visit last year, and I was biting my nails hoping the colors would not peak too soon. She arrived the last week of October, and stayed for five days. The colors were absolutely perfect at that time.

Substitute "FLORIDA" for "HOUSTON" and you get my feelings exactly a year ago.

In August it's not any worse over here.

fall is my favorite season and it is just around the corner! I am so excited. The fall colors are really beautiful in mid-late October. Perfect temps for walking, hiking, enjoying the outdoors.

Peak leaf color timing really depends on temperature and the amount and duration of wind and rain in the preceding months. Some years the leaves go from green to brown to ground with little color.

During the months of September, October, and early November, The Foliage Network provides foliage reports which are updated twice per week. The updates are posted on Wednesday and Saturday.
