The following is an opinion from a Raleigh native (me):
I think this is a common belief among the general population of Cary, not Raleigh. The Raleigh natives know that Cary is mainly compromised of "borrowed money" which, in some eyes, puts them on a lower pedestal meanwhile the Cary-ites think they are on a higher pedestal over the Raleigh natives.
Considering Cary is a magnet for people from higher cost areas, I'm guessing there are a lot of cash & carry people in Cary. I'm not sure it's as "borrowed money" as they may think.
We all know the well known acronym for Cary - Containment Area for RelocatedYankees. A Raleigh native recently told me that many years ago, before Cary really burgeoned, it was known as Cannot Afford Raleigh Yet!

Agreed. I'm aware of quite a larger number of homes in the mil plus category that were bought straight cash in Cary.

You hear both used today. Of course, there is always Chapel Hill, which is (in general) more expensive than either Cary or Raleigh.
