Hi everyone, My name is Nicole and I'm a single lesbian mother looking to relocate from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Durham NC. I'm looking for an artsy, bookstore, gay and lesbian friendly, Children friendly community and night life would be nice to. Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.
I don't know enough about specific Durham neighborhoods or raising children to really help. However, I can comment that you and your child should feel right at home in many places in Durham. Good luck!
Or Chapel Hill, or Raleigh. I haven't seen many "unaccepting" people here, although I'm sure they exist. Best of luck and welcome (if you decide to move)
Neighborhood-wise, check out options in downtown Durham or near 9th Street, including surrounding areas like Watts-Hillandale, Trinity Park, Old West Durham & Old North Durham. All varying degrees of artsy, child-friendly, and with good nightlife!

While the entire Triangle will be no problem as far as being a Lesbian mom, Durham does have a "reputation" of being more a "women's town" than, say, Raleigh or Chapel Hill. As mentioned above, the Ninth St/Borad St area is the "Bohemian" part of town, very cool (near Duke Univ). Old North Durham or Trinity Park (not sure which neighborhood it technically is) has a high Family residential ratio--streets like Club Blvd, Englewood, etc near northgate Mall, and it's a nice suburban 'hood. I can't speak for the schools, however. If "Jamerican" is still around, I believe she is also a Lesbian mother who moved here a year or two ago.
I know someone who goes to a lesbian physician in Durham, if you'd like me to track her name down. Or PM me for any other local GLBT (non-parenting) info

I am neither a Lesbian or a mother. I am very much a heterosexual male with a wife and two kids, so I hope that you are not disappointed. I was not even aware that Durham had a reputation of being a "women's town" as you put it. On the other hand, if your friend would like to live in Durham then she is more that welcomed because Durham has a fairly nice mixture of folks from various nationality, color, creed and sexual orientation. She should not have to focus on any special area because it is not like anyone is going to ask her if she is a Lesbian mom or not. Cheers!

Among gay people, Durham is considered a "women's town" meaning there seem to be more lesbians than gay men, compared to Raleigh etc. Not overall.
Durham rocks! IMO I'd stay downtown but not much further north as nightlife becomes a chore to drive to. Work also. Downtown is great, and south through Hope Valley area.
My wife is a member of a doll club with several gay members from Chapel Hill.
They are totally accepted in their town.
Chapel Hill is expensive, though.
