I just moved from Massachusetts.

I know from reading other posts on these forums that getting a teaching job is next to impossible around here..

But..
I've been keeping a close eye on the Wake County Public School employment page and sending applications in anyway. Recently the hiring freeze was lifted, but today the page shows no open positions. Is this normal for this time of year? Do any openings come up towards the end of the summer?

I notice that CHCCS still have a some openings listed - are these "real positions" or ones that are really being filled by teachers already in the system?

Is there any hope? haha

Also - any insight on how families find tutors? I would be interested in tutoring as well.

Any suggestions, etc would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Tutors are plentiful among UNC-CH, Duke, NCSU, NCCU, etc. students.

When my daughter was in 4th grade, she was having a hard time with math. We hired a private tutor but daughter spent most of the time, talking and tutor wasn't able to get her to do much work. I don't know where daughter gets her gift of gab!

I took her to Huntington and was amazed at how well they helped her. I took her back to Huntington when she was having some math issues in high school and again, they helped her and actually got her A's in math.

If you are looking for tutoring jobs, maybe you can check out Huntington and those types of businesses.

Schools will hire thru September - I think there is a date where if a school has a certain number of kids they can hire another teacher. That's how my sister got her first teaching job down here - the principal of the school was expecting a few kids to enroll and when they did it pushed him over a certain census number that allowed him to hire. Don't give up hope yet.

I suspect that some of the positions will be filled within the system, but CHCCS hires a number of new teachers every year. However, it may later in the summer. I was hired there just four days before school started.

You should check out the Hill Center's Tutoring Connection. A lot of families find tutors there.

Good luck!

Just make sure to keep checking. you will see a big uptick in the number of jobs posted as the school year gets closer, specifically in early August once the principals get a more accurate count of how many students they will have attending their schools.

Not sure where you are looking, but there are tons of positions being posted on Wake Counties website. They post new positions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. They do not post on the DPI website.

Not sure why it shows no open positions for you...quite a lengthy list there right now. Maybe you caught it while it was updating.

You have a better chance if you can teach special ed and/or you are a minority yourself. They just announced renewed efforts to make the teaching staff more reflective of the student population.

Good luck!

I'm confused. People post that there are NO openings for Wake County Public Schools and that there are budget cuts and there are teachers being laid off. Now people are posting that there are plenty of openings? Which is it?

They lifted the hiring freeze a few weeks ago. There are jobs posted on the website and I am sure that people are still be hired internally (terminating contracts) and externally. There were a few cuts in Wake county but they are mostly clerical staff and teacher assistants.
