On Saturday, I went out looking for fish/aquarium stores that sell fresh & salt water fish. Well, the first two places I went to (based on listings on Google) were no longer there.
So rather than waste more gas I thought I'd just ask the City-Data community to see if there are any aquarium hobbyists out there that know where the best fish stores are in this area.
My phone number is one digit off from Aquarium Outfitters on Main St in Wake Forest, and based on the number of calls I get for them they are a popular place(or maybe just have careless clients). Don't have fish so don't really know how good they are, but pretty sure they are still there. At least they were the last time I drove by.
The one in wake forest sucks. If you want to be blown away, head to reef keepers in clayton. Salt water only, but Amazing! http://www.reefkeepersaquarium.com/
There is also a smaller store next to panera across from triangle town center. Called the fish room thats ok and they have both fresh and salt. Look closely at their fish though, they get big batches in and they tend to have a lot of ick and such on them if they are new.
There is also a guy off of six forks, north of 98, (doesn't it change names at the 98 intersect to something else?) Its a residential place but he has his own coral farm. I think he only does every other weekend or something though. If you are in the area drive by. Hes got a sign up, if heading north across 98 hes a mile or so up on the left.
The one someone mentioned that was near chuckecheese moved its location to a warehouse place on capital but recently had to close.
Try Carolinatishtalk.com and look at the local sponsors for a good list. You'll also find info on nearby distributors that don't have a brick-n-mortar store and frag-swaps for used equipment.
I'd recommend you join the forum as it is free and does not require much personal info. I can vouch as I was a moderator before moving to Sandy-Ego.
My wife tells me that the Fish World store in N Raleigh is now open again:
2205 Westinghouse Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27604
The old store had a really good selection, and the staff were always really good and patient with our uneducated questions! The location is out of the way, but allows them to have a lot of space, so the store had lots of stock.
Hopefully it is the equal or better than the last incarnation.
Aquarium Outfitters is still there in Wake Forest, yes.
HUbby used to like a place (name escapes me) in raleigh off capital under chuck e cheeses but im pretty sure its closed now.
Also used to be a place on hillsborough street, headed out to cary. not sure if its there or not.
Nice to see another hobbyist, .
Yup, Aquarium Outfitters in Wake Forest is the place to go. Check out their website for coupons and weekly specials. In this hobby any help counts.
Fish Room on Capital is ok. But the prices can be a little out there. And so can the salespeople. Didn't find their freshwater fish anything to write home about. As the selection is small and common.
Fish World did reopen. But nothing like it was. The livestock is kept very low. And that is about all that is in there still. No dry goods.
Reefkeepers is alright. Hope you have a packed wallet tho. The fish are supposed to be private diver caught, and were outrageously expensive last time I was in there.
Fish Pros is gone.
Downunder Saltwater in Garner is preferred over Reefkeepers by the locals over that way. Just saltwater too tho.

The one that used to be under Chuck e Cheese was Fish World. They moved right before we got the tornadoes a few years ago. Last I saw they were in the Best Buy complex off Capital Blvd l.
