We are in Holly Springs and did have a roach problem...huge ones, every night, in the bathrooms. The previous owners did not have a service. I hired a quarterly service, and he will come back any time in between to respray for free. The first quarter I had him come back twice. But after that, no bugs!!! I think we've seen one in the last yr...and it came in the fireplace.

I have a huge phobia of cockroaches, so I feel your pain....

I purchased Home Defense Bug Spray from Lowes. You spray it inside and outside the perimeter of your house once a month. I have yet to see one ant, spider or cockroach in the house.

I love to hear about people who fret about putting their baby on the floor because of bugs, but don't hesitate to spray pesticides throughout the house on a regular basis.

Most of the professional pest services do not spray in the house or in the yard. They spray around the perimeter of the house, in the crawl space and sometimes around and under the eaves and gutters. Nowhere that a baby would really have access to.
We use Terminix quarterly but we still find an occassional roach or spider in the house. If you live on a wooded lot you're probably going to occassionally get those types of roaches. They aren't the same as the German cockroaches that are associated with dirty living conditions and tend to take over apartment buildings an such.
Still gross, I know. I find them on my deck at night.

Spider season has yet to come....blech!

I'm so glad to hear this is a common problem, particularly ants. We haven't had any roaches, but my goodness, the ants are EVERYWHERE. I was beginning to think my cleaning skills were just pfffft, but my house is spotless and they still come in. LUCKILY, it an apartment and we're outta here in a handful of months, and I can't wait, for many reasons.
That said, I think we'll get set up with some kind of bug exterminator, but I do worry about the chemicals.

Ants are attracted to water mostly (and of course, any food)....an organic/non-toxic, inexpensive solution it to plant mint. Yes, it spreads like crazy in the garden, but it won't hurt you....I take extra cuttings and place them inside door openings ---- ants retreat, they don't like it!

Thanks for the tip! I've been using vinegar.
Would mint extract work, you think? Maybe some tea tree oil?

We find Dodson Brothers to be a good company.

My wife complains about ants. I tell her she's lucky we don't have uncles too.

Mayble & Molly (beloved cat monsters) deal with any spiders or crickets that manage to come in.
