Hey all. I am 22 years old and I'm interested in relocating to either Raleigh or Cary for work and school, except I can't decide which one or if there is even a big difference between them, as far as renting goes.
Basically my main concerns are the cost of living and crime rate. I tried doing some web research but I'm not really able to find any good info to help me out. I don't need a lot of high-end amenities or anything fancy, just somewhere I can live cheaply while I go to school.
Commute times don't bother me so much though. I lived in MD until four months ago and I used to do 40-mile round trips to school. Ideally I would like to live in that general area though.
There are some decent apartments on Trinity Road. In that area you shouldn't have trouble finding something nice at a reasonable price. No need to look at Cary unless you just want to live there. Only downside of Trinity, depending on what part you live on, is that it can get congested when there are big events going on at the RBC Center, Carter-Finley, or the fairgrounds. Pluses are that you are possibly within walking distance of those places (albeit a long walk) and you are close to both I-40 and I-440 (but not too close).
Crime rate may be slightly higher in that area than in Cary. Typically the closer you get to NCSU, the more petty crime you are going to encounter. I lived within 5 miles of campus for about 5 years and had my car broken into once. By comparison I live in Cary now and we don't even bother to lock our car doors in our driveway. Neither is bad but it is a little worse in certain parts of Raleigh.
If you're schooling in Western Raleigh, then I'd say it makes sense to live there. There's a ton of variety in rentals there....apartments, townhomes, houses, condos, duplexes, etc. Something for everyone. Triangle.com, indyweek.com, and craigslist classifieds all have a good number listed in any given week.
You say commuting is not too much an issue now, but try to think ahead as gas prices go up and this region's traffic hassles become worse. You'll want that money and free time as a student!
Besides...most people under 30 are bored to tears in Cary.
